Whenon closed circuit, the upper pawlonly is in engagement. Whenthe detent is released, the upperpawl is first acted on by therevolving wheel. This actiondraws the hammer back fromthe bell. As the pin rides throughthe slot, the pawl escapes fromthe teeth, the other one en-gages, and the hammer is drivenagainst the bell. The bell-ringing lever rises and isagain caught by the detentjust as the pawls changeplaces, and the motion isarrested with the upper pawlengaged until the next breakin the current occurs. 443.
