After tsunami. Image 2 of 2. Composite Ikonos satellite image of Thailand's south-western coast. This image was taken on 29 December 2004. On 26 December 2004 there was an underwater earthquake, the largest for 40 years, between the Eurasian and Australian plates off the coast of Indonesia. Shockwaves from this created huge waves, or tsunamis, which devastated surrounding coastlines. Most of the beaches, including those around Pankarang Cape (upper left) have been destroyed. Brown areas were previously covered in lush vegetation. The death toll in Thailand is in excess of 5000, with half of those tourists. For an image of the coast before the tsunami, see image E275/032.
