An adult black-crowned night heron stands on its left leg while resting the right leg by pulling it close to the body, June 9, 2021, in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. Long-legged herons tuck their legs beneath them and stand in a one-legged stance to keep their legs warm as well as to rest. The night heron is a common bird found in wetlands throughout the world except in the coldest regions. They are easily recoginized by their red eyes and hunchbacked appearance. They are among seven heron species that engage in bait fishing by throwing objects in the water to lure fish. They conceal themselves in foliage and brush in the daytime, foraging for food mostly in the evening and at night. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
