That condition, and the suspicionof undue activity in the matter of partisanpolitics in the governing bodies of these in-stitutions, undoubtedly had something to dowith, their failure to receive earlier financialsupport from the State. There is no excuse for making any educa-tional institution supported by the tax-payersa denominational school, and it will alwayspartake of that character, whatever its pub-lished announcements may say, as long asany arm of the Church—using the term ina wide sense—directs its activities.
