Cranequin, c. 1480–1500. France (?), late 15th Century. Steel and brass; incised decoration; pierced traceried Gothic windows; rack: cm (15 1/2 in.); crank: cm (11 7/8 in.); gear housing: cm (4 3/4 in.). Bows made of composite materials were developed during the 1400s. They were immensely powerful and could be spanned only with the aid of a winder called a cranequin like the one seen here.
