Human scalp, light micrograph

Light micrograph of a section through a scalp. The epidermis of the skin is red. It consists of the stratum corneum, a layer of dead, scaly cells (dark red), which are continuously sloughed off and replaced with new cells from the living layer, the stratum germinativum (red). Below this the dermis consists of connective tissue (blue), sebaceous glands (light pink) and hair follicles (dark pink). Hairs in the follicles are red. Subcutaneous fat (white) and muscle fibres (red) are along bottom. Magnification: x40 when printed at 15cm tall.
