Abnormal stem cell, illustration

Illustration of an abnormal stem cell caused by polycythaemia vera (PV), a rare blood cancer characterised by the overproduction of normal red blood cells. Mutation of the JAK2 gene in the stem cells located in the bone marrow results in an enormous overproduction of cells. The increase of red blood cells can cause thickening of the blood, leading to issues such as clotting.
