This ‘420’ event is advertised as a mini-festival for people, reefer-puffing, weed smokers, ganja-related activities by people who support the legalisation of cannabis culture. Police officers warned they would take a dim view of anyone taking drugs at this year’s Puff-Puff-Pass Day event. Greater Manchester Police and have had to issue a number of verbal warnings to people doing so. The term “420” has become universally known as the code word for smoking pot.
Police have issued a warning to anyone intending to break the law at a pro-cannabis event planned for this weekend in Platt Fields Park. Although it is not billed as an event where people should smoke cannabis in public, last year Greater Manchester Police had to issue a number of verbal warnings to people doing so. Police officers warned they would continue to take a dim view of anyone taking drugs at this year’s event. Speaking ahead of the Sunday afternoon event, Chief Inspector Arif Nawaz said: “Greater Manchester Police have not received any official notification of a planned event at Platt fields Park on Sunday, April 19. “We are aware that an event may take place on this date. GMP is trying to identify an organiser in order to start discussions and ensure there is minimal disruption or impact on the local community. “Officers will be patrolling the area in conjunction with officials from the park and anyone seen to be actively breaking the law, will be dealt with in an appropriate and proportionate manner. “There was no disorder at a similar event last year and verbal warnings were given to those who were seen smoking cannabis in front of the general public.” This year the event will be from 1pm at Platt Fields Park on Wilbraham Road and police have planned a visible presence. The warning comes as pot proponents in cities around the globe, including London, prepare to celebrate cannabis culture on April 20, an annual day known as 420. 420 is a code adopted by weed smokers thought to stretch back to the 70s when school-kids chose it as the time to meet up and get high. Since then 420 has become a private joke for pot lovers, appearing everywhere from kids TV to episodes of The Price Is Right. "It is not suggested that any person featured is taking or has taken any illegal substance".
