On the morning of the 29thof June some of our cavalry onthe James River road were drivenin by a battalion of North Caro-lina cavalry, who charged clearinto my lines, which were somasked as not to be seen. Fiveguns and a few rifie shots brokethem completely up in a fewminutes, killing, wounding andcapturing 80 to 100 of them, withno loss to the division. In the course of the morningSykes brigade crossed the swamp and formed on my right, and manyother troops in the course of the day came up.
