James Bainham, an English lawyer and Protestant reformer was accused of heresy by Sir Thomas More, then Chancellor, who imprisoned and flogged him in his house at Chelsea in 1531. The following February after a spell in prison he was ready for re-admission to the church and performed penance by standing with a faggot on his shoulder during the sermon at Paul's Cross. Within a month he openly withdrew his recantation during service at St. Austin's church, apprehended, brought before the bishop's vicar-general and sentenced as a relapsed heretic. He was burned in Smithfield on 30 April 1532
