A Southern train travels over the Ouse Valley Viaduct near Balcombe, West Sussex. It is boom time on Britain's railways, which have not seen as many passengers since the days of mass troop demobilisation after the Second World War. It emerged yesterday [10 April 2008] that rail travellers clocked up billion miles and made billion journeys last year, nearly 8 per cent more than in 2006.
