The Regiment, both officers and men,exhibited rare skill and bravery. Unsupported for several hours,we maintained and held our own immediately under the walls ofthe fort, repelling every sortie of the Rebels until we were orderedto retire. Our loss was very heavy. Here Major Merrick felldangerously wounded. There was no braver or more gallantofficer of his rank in the service. His wound caused the ampu-tation of his limb and his necessary retirement.
