Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893). Portrait of the French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot wearing the medal of the Legion of Honour. Charcot is considered to be the founder of modern neurology. In 1862, he was appointed to Paris's Salpetriere hospital, later founding its famous neurological clinic. He used observation and autopsies to identify several diseases of the nervous and muscular systems (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and Charcot's disease are examples).
