Handbill for syphilis cure. 17th-century handbill advertising a cure for syphilis (here called the 'French Pox') and other venereal (sexually-transmitted) diseases. The cure is provided by the High German (from Hamburg), London-resident doctor James Tilborgh (holding forceps in portrait at top). His address is given as the Black Swan at St Giles in the Fields. Prospective customers are advised to look for three lanterns on a balcony and are assured of privacy and no payment without a cure. Tilborgh was famed across Europe. This handbill is from a collection of adverts, mostly relating to quack medicines, dating from the period 1660 to 1716.
