Photograph by David Coleman. The Abraham Lincoln statue, located in front of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals in Judiciary Square, Washington, DC, is one of the oldest public monuments to Lincoln in the United States. Sculpted by Lot Flannery and unveiled in 1868, just three years after Lincoln’s assassination, the statue commemorates the 16th president’s legacy. Made of marble, the statue originally stood atop a towering column but was later reinstalled on a lower granite pedestal in 1923 after the courthouse’s renovation. The life-size figure of Lincoln is depicted in a standing pose, with his right arm extended in a gesture of speech, symbolizing his role as a lawyer and statesman. His left hand rests on a Roman fasces (bundle of rods containing an axe with the blade protruding; in ancient Rome it was a symbol of a magistrate's power), symbolizing unity and authority. This sculpture remains a significant piece of Washington DC’s public art, reflecting the deep respect and sorrow felt by the city’s residents in the wake of Lincoln’s assassination. The statue continues to stand as a tribute to Lincoln’s leadership during the Civil War and his efforts to preserve the Union.
