After two or three hours of this work, we reached a " steady" or long stretch of shxck water, where the oars were substituted for the poles, pipes lit, and yarns spun. Our " boss," a lean wiry backwoodsman, ])y name M'Cormaek. was quite a character, and entertained us with his ad^^entures in the woods, and his experience with the North American Indians, for whom he professed the most intense disgust.
