The fortress of Monrupino (Trieste) stands on top of a hill visible from both Italy and Slovenia. Initially a hillfort from the Bronze Age, then the scene of clashes between the Romans and Histrians, it has always been an important refuge for the people of the area even at the time of the barbarian invasions. A first small church was built around the year 1000. Having fallen into ruin, a second church was built in its place, built in the early 16th century. The walls are built directly on the rocky peaks of the hill, forming a single body with it.
