FRANCIE MARES [Gian Giacomo Trivulzio marchese di Vigavano maresciallo di Francia] In large stone-vaulted room, large copper cauldron over fire in center tended by kneeling man with woman stirs contents (sausages) while man embraces her from behind, man with axe stands next to 2 pigs (R), man inflating pig's blatter to serve a baloon for small child (L); peasants bring offerings to god Saturn [=personification of December] a bearded old man with bound feet, holding sickle & standing on plinth in center of room; in upper register are a central cartouche with the arms, impresa (a siren breaking a file on a diamond), & motto of the patron, flanked by 2 coronas representing the sun (L), & the zodiac sign for Capricorn (R) (BRD) hexagonal compartments, linked by rosettes, containing a repeating sequence of 5 coats of arms [patron's in corners & at mid-points]; (UPR & LWR BRD) identifying inscription around each coat of arms Designed by Bramantino in 1501-4. The coats of arms on the border may allude to the 1503 marriage of Gian Giacomo Trivulzio to Paola di Ridolfo Gonzaga.
