Lymphatic vessel valve. Light micrograph of a vessel from the human lymphatic system, showing a one-way valve (v-shaped structure at centre). The valve allows fluid to pass from top to bottom, but prevents backflow. The lymphatic system is a network of lymph vessels running beneath the skin which serve lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, groin and abdomen. It drains fluid (lymph) from body tissues, but having no central pump it depends on body movement and one-way valves. The lymphatic system plays a vital role in the body's immune response, as it transports white blood cells that help destroy disease-causing organisms. Karmin-Fuchsin stain.
