Animal kill traps on DOC land on New Zealand's South Island. Introduced species such as stoats have taken a severe toll on indigenous wild life, especially species of flightless bird, of which the famous National bird, the kiwi, is one. Traps such as these are easily seen at the side of trails and serve as a reminder to visitors of the programme that the DOC is ondergoing to preserve the nation's wildlife heritage.
