The problem with this process (although it is a valid life-saver) is that heated plastics may be carcinogenic and mix with the water - causing a long-term health problem. HOWEVER, surviving the immediate situation is of primary concern. So boiling foul water which may cause dysentery etc. (and thus severe dehydration and ultimately death) in a plastic bottle is less of a concern at that moment in time. Ultimately it is a personal judgment call.
