He was thefirst Republican mayor of Boston, having been electedin 1855, when that party was formed. His term ofoffice, lasting two years, was one of the most importantof any since the city of Boston was incorporated. Manygreat public improvements were begun, including thedevelopment of the Back Bay district, many streetwidenings, the building of the City Hospital, and thecompletion and dedication of the Public Library build-.
