When Moses went up into biblical Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments around 1310 BC , he left the Israelites for forty days and forty nights during which time Aaron, prophet, high priest, and the brother of Moses, constructed a "molten calf", built an altar before the calf and early the next day worshipped and offered burnt-offerings to the calf. When an angry Moses, came down from the mountain hed burnt the golden calf in a fire, ground it to powder, scattered it on water, and forced the Israelites to drink it.
