Rancher Fills Generator with Diesel Fuel to Pump Water for Cattle

Yoder, Colorado - Dick Tanner fills a generator with red-dyed diesel fuel to pump water for cattle on the Bohart Ranch. Windmills normally do the job, but generators are used as a backup when the wind dies. Diesel fuel intended for off-road use carries less tax than regular diesel; it is dyed red to make improper use easier to detect. Bohart Ranch is a working cattle ranch that is managed in partnership with the Nature Conservancy to maintain the ranch's prairie ecosystem.
