Railway and Locomotive Engineering . ef features of an-other type are: full protection againstcomplete loss of the brake pipe pressurefrom a failure on any part of the system; eliminate, so far as possible, all the un-desirable and to this intent the West-inghouse Co. have perfected a new brakeof a universal design. The P. C. equipment, similar to the brake, provides one size of controlvalve for all sizes of brake cylinders, but itis designed for steam road service, whileother control valves such as the E-11 areelectrically operated. The idea is to have one standard equip-ment for all classes of service as well asall sizes of brake cylinders and for anynecessary number of brake cylinders tobe operated both electrically or pneumat-ically in either steam or electric perfecting this brake provisionswere made to embody or eliminate any ofthe features we have enumerated so thatauv class of service can lie covered and be ample time for this as the brake equip-ment has not as yet received a name fo> maximum and prcdctermmcd flexibilityfor service operation; certain and uni-form action; predetermined and maxi-mum practicable difference between ser-vice and emergency braking power; in-staneous quick action; complete separa-tion of service and emergency features, both electric and pneumatic; full emergen-cy pressure obtainable at will, even aftera full service application; automaticemergency when predetermined brakepipe reduction is made after equalization,or when brake pipe pressure is reducedbeyond a predetermined danger point, dueto leakage or other causes; brake cylinderpressure maintained in emergency, andimproved graduated release feature. Now it is evident that with the variouspassenger car brake eiiuipinciUs now inuse, there should be sonic standard brakethat will embody all of the desirable feat-ures of the present system of brakes and this installatiun can be started with aplain automatic operation or with themost elTicient brake ever
