Gynaecological examination. Abdominal X-ray of healthy female reproductive organs. A contrast medium was introduced into the uterus (upper centre to lower right) and its Fallopian tubes (oviducts, thin, extending from uterus) through the cervix (lower right), the uterine neck. The dye has passed into, and spread out within, the abdominal cavity. This indicates that there is no obstruction of the oviducts. The technique is called hysterosalpingography, and allows for the diagnosis of reproductive disorders such as oviduct blockage, uterine tumours and injury. It is performed in the week following menstruation, which ensures that the woman is not pregnant.
