AUTHORSHIP clxxvii The Apocalypse is now ascribed to the Elder by perhapsa majority of critics. But recent criticism goes further, andtransfers to the Elder nearly all that has been hitherto given tothe Apostle. There were two Johns in the Apostolic age, butonly one of them was a resident in Asia, and he was the Elderand not the son of Zebedee. It was the Elder, it is said, and notthe Apostle who was the disciple that Jesus loved, who gave hisname to the Johannine books of the New Testament, and claimsto be the writer of the Apocalypse. At this point it will be convenient to collect the traditions whichrelate to the residence of John in Asia and his exile to Patnios.(i) Residence in Asia. Iran, ii 22. 5 (o/j.
