Lines West URING the year 1902 the Burlington & Mis- Dsouri River Railroad in Nebraska, now knownas C. B. & Q. Lines West, built a 4-6-0 typeof locomotive for passenger service, embody-ing in the design of its boiler the wide fire-box which general practice has used withtrailing wheels in passenger service, or with-out trailing wheels in freight service, as thesmall diameter of drivers permits a compara-tively deep box without an unusually high center ofgravity. The height center of boiler above rail of thisengine was 9 ft. 6 ins., and while there are some whoconsider this height dangerous, no inconvenience wasexperienced in this particular. The engine here illustrated is largely a developmentof the former, its principal features having been baseden the experience with the previous ten-wheeler. It isclassified by the road as the K-5 type. Lignite or bitum-. ones. The results to be obtained with a free steamingboiler supplying cylinders comparatively small, whenjudged by the ratios of recent practice, will undoubtedlybe observed very closely and it is believed that the cry ofengine would not steam would be less general in coldwinter weather if the practice of a greater ratio betweenheating surface and cylinder volume was secured by in-creasing the boilers without adding so much to cylinderdimensions. The flues are 2 ins. outside diameter and 15 ft. 1 The necessity for greater adhesion to provide in-creased tractive effort has made it desirable to use threepairs of drivers, and as the wide grate has been intro-duced to maintain sufficient steam pressure, many de-signers have used the trailing wheels to carry the rearportion of the boiler. This number of wheels necessi-tates a long boiler, and tubes 20 and 21 ft. long have fol-lowed. In the engine here under consideration, however,
