Kuwait seen from space. View of most of the country of Kuwait. North is oriented toward the top left corner. The large dark patch in the desert below centre is the scorched and oil- covered sand in the Al-Burgan oil field, still scarred after the 1991 Gulf War. It appears slightly lighter than previous Shuttle flights, as fresh sand is gradually covering the blackened surface. The field is crossed by pale-coloured roads and dotted with black lakes of oil. Kuwait City is on the coast just left of centre. This photograph was taken by the crew of Shuttle Atlantis during Mission STS-46 of 31 July to 8 August 1992.
