19 World War One NCOs here from several North of England Regiments: 'West Yorkshire', 'Manchester', 'Lancaster and York', 'Lancashire Fusiliers', 'Durham Light Infantry', 'Liverpool Pals', 'Duke of Wellington's (West Riding)'. The photographer is Stapleton of Eastborough, Scarborough and the location may be Burniston Barracks, although I am not certain of this. The soldier, front row, far left, is a member of the 1/4 Battalion of the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment, a territorial unit mobilised for war in August 1914 and going to France in April 1915. The four Liverpool Pals Battalions (17th-20th) of the King's Liverpool Regiment were raised by Lord Derby in August and October 1914 and went to France in November 1915. They wore the 'Eagle and Child' crest of Lord Derby in contrast to the standard 'Horse of Hanover over a Scroll' of the other Liverpool battalions. Some Lancashire Fusilier battalions landed at Gallipoli in May 1915, others at Boulogne in May 1915. West Yorkshire, and York and Lancaster battalions landed in France in April 1915. Several battalions of the Manchester Regiment landed at Gallipoli in May 1915. The soldiers here are probably on a training course, late 1914 or early 1915.
