He received the appointmentof commissary sergeant of the Fifth New Hampshire Volun-teers, was mustered in Oct. 26, 1861, and mustered out , 1864. After his return from the war he resided in EastConcord for a time, when he moved to Manchester. He returned to Concord in 1874, where he afterwardsresided. He was appointed deputy secretary of state by thelate secretary, A. B. Thompson, in 1877, and filled that posi-. ^(2<2C^iY^^^ BIOGRAPHICAL. 317 tion most acceptably for ten 5ears. He was then electedlibrarian of the New Hampshire Historical Society, whichof&ce he held until he was obliged to relinquish it on accountof sickness, and he edited the 9th volume of the Societyscollections. He was appointed editor of State Papers in1881, and edited eight volumes of that series. He was deputy United States marshal for taking the censusin 1870; a member of the New Hampshire constitutional con-vention in 1876; secretar}- of the New Hampshire college ofelectors in 1884; commander of E. E. Sturtevant Post, , G. A. R.; assistant quartermaster-general, Department ofNew Hampshire, G A.
