Mines explosion test facility. Test explosion during experiments at the research facility in Buxton, Derbyshire, UK, part of the Safety in Mines Research Establishment (SMRE). The SMRE was a forerunner of what later became the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). Health and safety research in the UK started with investigations in the early 20th century into safety in mines, particularly coal dust explosions. Photographed in the 1960s.
