The La Sal Mountains of extreme eastern Utah, as seen from Interstate 70

The LaSal Mountains near Moab, Utah are one of three groups of laccoliths - volcanic mountains that formed underground without erupting - in southeast Utah. They form when lava wells up from below creating a blister-like bulge in the overlying rock, after which the latter erodes away. One edge of this bulge can be seen in the much older red rock, mostly Entrada Formation sandstone, between us and the mountains.
