Flower ovary and ovules. Coloured freeze-fracture scanning electron micrograph (SEM) through the ovary of a dicot flower. The ovary (purple) contains ovules (green). The ovules are the female sex cells, and when fertilised they grow into the seeds of the plant. The formation of the seed completes the process of reproduction in flowering plants. The seed coat forms from the outer covering of the ovule. Magnification: x60 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
