Although a long and patient study of living forms is necessary toa full understanding of these minute and wonderful organisms, sucha study, which would be impossible to many, is not needed to usean artificial Key to their classification. The general build, the ^ tout ensemble,^ is quite characteristic,and unchangeable. Great variations of form, size, and sculpturemay exist, but there is a something in the general appearance ofthe siliceous frustules (skeletons) which enables the Diatomis
