Mycoplasma genitalium bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Mycoplasma genitalium bacteria. M. genitalium is a small parasitic bacterium that lives in the genital and respiratory tracts of primates. It has the smallest genome (total genetic material) of all known living organisms. Its genome was mapped in 1993, making it the second complete bacterial genome to be sequenced. Magnification: x55,000 when printed 10cm wide.
