Oesophagogastrectomy surgery. Surgeon's gloved hand with tumour tissue removed during an oesophagogastrectomy operation. Oesophagogastrectomy involves removal of the lower part of the oesophagus, and the upper part of the stomach. The remaining part of the oesophagus is then surgically joined to the remaining part of the stomach. The procedure is commonly carried out to remove cancerous tissue in the region.
