Some persons always carry a filter — possibly a wise precaution. Note-Book. — Of equal importance with the map is the note-book. Here should be entered memoranda bearing upon the work of the day. A note-book of uncalendered paper is advised, for the reason that it is often desirable to make sketches. These cannot be so well done on a smooth surface. It should have strong but light, flexible covers, and be of such form as to be readily carried in the coat-pocket. It is desirable to adopt a uniform size for note-books, which can then be numbered, dated, and filed away. If well kept they become a mine of information, not only to the writer, but to other botanists who may have occa- sion to consult them. A very convenient note-book is here figured. It has been used by Mr. Collins for several years, and the prominent feat- ures of it consist in its having the lower corner, at the bind- ing, perforated by a hole through which a string is passed and secured. At the other end of this string — which should be once and a half or twice as long as the book — a short pencil is fast- ened. In closing the book the string is shut in at the page pic. , bemg used (as shown in figure), and thrust into the pocket with the pencil hang-.
