Astronaut William Shepherd using a portable onboard computer in the mid-deck of Shuttle Discovery during Mission STS-41. The portable computers are capable of processing data and may be interfaced with the Shuttle's main computer at a variety of points throughout the craft. Launched on 5th October 1990, Discovery's crew deployed the Ulysses solar exploration probe as their primary objective during the four-day stay in space. Discovery returned safely to Earth on 9th October 1990 after 66 orbits.
