View S of St Hilda's Well below her church at Hinderwell, North Yorkshire, England, UK: Medieval or earlier, the well head restored 1912 by Hilda Palmer of Grinkle Park. Spring reputedly appeared in C7th in response to prayers of St Hilda, Abbess of Whitby, who had been asked for help by the villagers during a drought. Some believe St Hilda had a hermitage retreat from Whitby on the mound where the church stands. The well is one of very few recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. The church was rebuilt 1773 on a Medieval site with Saxon origins. The two-stage battlemented tower is of 1817, major alterations were made 1895. Coursed square stone with quoins, Welsh slate roof. Water used to be drawn from the well chamber using a hand pump fixed to the old well cover (marked on OS map of 1894 & in Victorian photos) but it was dismantled in 1912 when the well head was rebuilt with cut sandstone slabs & rusticated coursed stone walls. The spring water has healing properties, especially good for eyes, & the well used to be visited every Ascension Day when children made a sweet & medicinal drink by shaking spring water & liquorice together in a bottle. The spring still flows & open air services are held every year in July. Handrails have been added to the steps since this photograph was taken.
