The Red Dragon statue commemorates the 38th Welsh Division's attack on Mametz Wood in July 1916 as part of the battle of the Somme. Its is situated on the line of the Welsh Division's starting lines and looks out at the Mametz wood, their objective. It was designed by David Peterson and paid for mainly by the Cardiff Western Front was unveiled at a ceremony on 11 July 1987
