Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855), English poet and novelist. Eldest of three sisters, Charlotte enlisted at school at the age of 14. She left a year later to teach her younger sisters. After failing in an attempt to open their own school, the sisters started to write and each published books in 1846 under pseudonyms. Charlotte's first novel was rejected by publishers, but her second, Jane Eyre, was a great success. Combining naturalism with gothic melodrama, the book was unusual in that it was written from the first-person female perspective. Charlotte published four major novels and two collections of poems before her death at the age of just 38 years, possibly from tuberculosis or typhus.
