Illustration of the French AIDS researcher and virologist Luc Montagnier (1932-2022). In the 1980s, Montagnier contributed to the discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). In 2008, he was jointly awarded a share of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Francoise Barre-Sinoussi for their work on HIV and Harald zur Hausen for his work on the human papilloma virus (HPV).
