Jean-Baptiste Chevalier de Lamarck (1 August 1744 - 18 December 1829), known simply as Lamarck, was a French naturalist, biologist and academic. It is believed that Lamarck spent so much of his time looking through magnifying glasses & microscopes that it caused him to be blind for the last 10 years of his life.
