Genetically engineered tomato plants. Researcher examining tomato seedlings growing in a sterile environment. The seedlings have had a gene that prevents their tomatoes from developing seeds added to their genome. This was achieved by adding the gene (iaaM) to bacterial cells in a plasmid, a small circle of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). The bacteria were then allowed to infect tomato plant cells. The cells that had taken up the plasmid, or been transformed, were then cultured and grown into seedlings. Photographed at the University of Verona, Italy.
