The first branch was established in East Bos-ton, the second story of the old Lyman Schoolbuilding, 37 Meridian Street, having been selectedfor that purpose, and the rooms are still in use bythe branch. Besides the purchases made from thelibrary funds, and duplicates sent from the CentralLibrary, the Sumner Library Association of EastBoston gave its collection. The delivery of books 108. AWElson d Co.,Boston THE CITY OF BOSTON at this branch began on the twenty-seventh ofJanuary, 1871, the complete printed catalogue wasissued on the third of March, and formal openingceremonies conducted in Sumner Hall, March their next report, the Trustees remarked that —The popular interest already excited by this first ex-periment, demonstrates clearly what is desirable in otherquarters of the City, and will lead to specific recommenda-tions in this respect to the City Council, before the end ofthe present year. The circulation for home use from this branchin the year following its establishment was 74,804volumes. By an appropriation made by the City Coun-cil available in May, 1872, provision was made fora branch in South Boston. About 1,400 volumes,forming the nucleus of the collection, were furnishedby the Mattapan Library Association. These wereplaced in the hands of the Trustees of the Library inJanuary. Supplemented
