Thefirst engine of this type was built at the Companys shopsat Turin, and proved so successful that 40 more have beenbuilt with but slight modifications from the original loco-motive. The boilers of these engines are 60 in, in diameter ofbarrel and 18 ft. 6 in. in length over all. They have 203tubes 2y,^ in. in diameter and 15 ft. long. The fire-box is7 ft. 8 in. in length and 3 ft. 3 in. in width. It is on the. C^ Nevertheless, the enthusiastic Bourdiol felt competent tomake estimates for a canal, and did so, designing a canal31 miles in length to overpass an elevation of 144 ft., andto be furnished with 22 locks, u on each side. The costof this visionary canal was to be if34,ooo, Mr. Gisborne subsequently made a more careful ex-ploration of this route, which resulted in the determinationofthe lowest divide with an elevation of 930 ft. !
