Tombstone for a miner, William Hendy, killed in Denniston Mine on 31st May 1901 aged 47. The cemetery was below the town at Waimangaroa. He died in Denniston Mine, a site way above the cemetery. The dead were brought down from the mining town as the ground there was too hard and rocky to dig a grave at tombstone was erected by his wife. Life in Denniston was hard. The population went through difficult times and lived in very poor conditions. The weather was often very bad, cold and damp. There were no roads up to the top of the mountain. You either walked up and down a track or rode the infamous inclined plane.
