Fire caves in trunks of ancient giant redwood trees aka California Redwoods or Coast Redwoods Sequoia sempervirens Muir Woods CA
A fire has burned caves into the base of the trunks of these ancient redwood trees in Muir Woods, California. The Muir Woods National Monument is an old growth forest of Giant Redwoods aka Coast Redwoods aka California Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), a relative of the Giant Sequoia and the tallest trees in the world and can live to be 1,200 to 1,800 years old. The average age of the redwoods in Muir Woods is between 500 and 800 years old; the oldest is 1,200 years old. Redwood is very fire resistant and although these trees have had portions of their base burned they continue to live. In fact, although the fire caves look new, the last forest fire that occurred in Muir Woods took place about 160 years before this photo was taken. California Redwoods are evergreens, part of the cypress family Cupressaceae.
