He declined todo anything, either by voice or pen, to strengthenthe hand of the National Government. He con-tinued to reside in Concord until the time of hisdeath, which occurred in October, 1869. He wasone of the most genial and social of men, an hon-ored communicant of the Episcopal Church, andone of the kindest of neighbors.
